While Peak Strategy’s Qualitative Benchmarking Tool makes the process of reviewing a company easy because it covers best practices on a function by function basis, it maybe too detailed for a typical employee or senior management.  That’s why we created a summary workbook that helps explain qualitative benchmarking in the strategic context of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.  If employees have not heard of the award, they certainly of heard of some of the award winners, adding credibility to the process.

What is the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award?

The Baldrige Award is given by the President of the United States to businessesùmanufacturing and service, small and largeùand to education, health care and nonprofit organizations that apply and are judged to be outstanding in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results.

What is Included in the Baldrige Assessment Tool?

The Baldrige Assessment Tool uses the Malcolm Baldrige performance excellence criteria which is made up of seven categories:

Leadership Examines how senior executives guide the organization and how the organization addresses its responsibilities to the public and practices good citizenship.  This tab in the worksheet contains 12 different criteria to benchmark your company against leadership best practices.

Strategic planning Examines how the organization sets strategic directions and how it determines key action plans.  This tab in the worksheet contains 8 different criteria to benchmark your company against strategic planning best practices.

Customer and market focus Examines how the organization determines requirements and expectations of customers and markets; builds relationships with customers; and acquires, satisfies, and retains customers.  This tab in the worksheet contains 20 different criteria to benchmark your company against customer and market focus best practices.

Measurement, analysis, and knowledge management Examines the management, effective use, analysis, and improvement of data and information to support key organization processes and the organizations performance management system.  This tab in the worksheet contains 11 different criteria to benchmark your company against measurement and analysis best practices.

Workforce focus Examines how the organization enables its workforce to develop its full potential and how the workforce is aligned with the organizations objectives. This tab in the worksheet contains 18 different criteria to benchmark your company against workforce best practices.

Process management Examines aspects of how key production/delivery and support processes are designed, managed, and improved.  This tab in the worksheet contains 14 different criteria to benchmark your company against process management best practices.

Results Examines the organizations performance and improvement in its key business areas: customer satisfaction, financial and marketplace performance, human resources, supplier and partner performance, operational performance, and governance and social responsibility. The category also examines how the organization performs relative to competitors. This tab in the worksheet contains 8 different criteria to benchmark your company against leadership best practices.

Each of the 91 criteria are assigned a percentage score based on two areas:

1) Implementation and Deployment – Did the organization use the proper methods and techniques to successfully launch and deploy the quality program, were the practices relevant, did they actually work for all targeted areas (production, customer service, supply chain management, etc.), has the practice been fully integrated into all parts of the organization, etc.

2) Actual Results – Measured outcomes and performance levels clearly demonstrate improvement, the scope of improvement is wide, the improvement is permanent and sustainable, and the measured feedbacks are very reliable.

The spreadsheet weights the categories and sub-categories and produces a SWOT analysis that highlights your successes and areas for improvement.  There is an additional spreadsheet that applies the performance scores to your company’s Income Statement to demonstrate both the positive and negative effects of the scoring.

Consultant Feedback Examples

There are a lot of benchmarking services out there but they are usually are for large companies and are very expensive.  This product contains the detail and analytical structure I need and it is geared towards small and mid sized businesses.  Great tool!   - Performance Shop, Michael Trevors

There are a lot of variables with this worksheet, but the color coding makes it easy to navigate to the most important issues.  I like the management summary page.  Thanks.  - Corporate Strategy, LLC , Frank White

The three things I liked about this is that is it relevant, easy to use and insightful.  - Keaton Enterprises, Sarah

Qualitative benchmarking is not rocket science.  However, it takes a lot of time to develop a list of best practices and put them in a tool that works.  In the past I used my own Excel spreadsheet and it did not look as nearly as good as the reports in this workbook.   - Packed Performance, Keller Frederick
